Karachi: As the city grapples with a severe heatwave, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh has significantly ramped up its response efforts to mitigate the impact on vulnerable populations. The PDMA’s latest situation report, covering the period from May 21 to July 3, 2024, details a comprehensive and coordinated approach to address the ongoing crisis.
According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority, the agency, in close collaboration with District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) and Emergency Operation Centres, has increased the establishment of heat stabilization camps across the region. To date, 294 such camps have been set up with the support of 40 humanitarian partners, providing critical services such as safe transportation, patient referrals to heat stroke centers, and hospitals.
These partners have also been actively involved in community outreach, conducting awareness sessions on the dangers of heatwaves and distributing educational materials. Additionally, efforts have been bolstered by extensive media campaigns, including banners and social media content, to educate the public on heatwave safety and preparedness.
Local authorities, including Deputy Commissioners and Chairmen of DDMAs, have undertaken regular inspections of the heat stabilization camps to ensure they are adequately equipped and effectively managed. Some districts have also initiated plantation drives to enhance green cover and contribute to longer-term climate resilience.
This intensified response underscores PDMA Sindh’s commitment to safeguarding residents from the harsh effects of the heatwave and highlights the critical role of collaboration among government bodies and humanitarian organizations in disaster management.
