Karachi Hosts Crucial Session to Enhance Customs Procedures in Maritime Sector


Karachi: In an effort to improve customs procedures within the maritime industry, the Global Compact Network Pakistan (GCNP) and the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN) hosted an important session titled “Streamlining the Missing Links in Customs Procedures for Port Operations and Shipping Sector.” This session gathered key stakeholders from various facets of the maritime sector, including terminal operators and members of the All-Pakistan Shipping Association (APSA), at the Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited (KGTL).



According to Employers’ Federation of Pakistan, the event featured crucial discussions led by esteemed speakers from Pakistan Customs, including Omar Shafique, Collector of Customs Enforcement (Port), and Daud Pirzada, Director of Intelligence and Investigation (Customs). They addressed significant issues such as shipping licensing, cargo handling, and the management of stuck-up and GD hold containers, as well as the processes involved in container auctioning or destruction, and amendments in shipping documentation.



Syed Tanvir Ahmed, Senior Advisor to GCNP-MACN, initiated the session by outlining the project’s mission and its objectives, highlighting the session’s role in promoting transparent and efficient customs operations essential for fostering global trade and economic growth.



Participants engaged in a lively QandA session, discussing the challenges faced in the maritime sector and exploring expert solutions to enhance operational efficiencies. The session concluded with a presentation of a commemorative shield to the CEO of Karachi Gateway Terminal Ltd and certificates to all participants.



The meeting underscored the importance of implementing good practices and anti-corruption measures in the maritime sector, a crucial element for promoting sustainable and ethical trade practices worldwide. By collaborating with government bodies, businesses, and civil society, the MACN has made significant strides in implementing anti-corruption initiatives globally, with continued efforts to ensure transparency and integrity within the maritime industry of Pakistan.



The event also commemorated “World Maritime Day,” emphasizing MACN’s commitment to enhancing maritime practices in collaboration with its stakeholders.
