Karachi Faces Urban Flood Risk as NDMA Warns of Heavy Rainfall

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an urgent advisory for Karachi Division, forecasting scattered moderate to heavy rainfall that could lead to urban flooding in low-lying areas today through August 6, 2024.

According to Press Information Department, the NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Center has alerted residents to the potential for significant urban inundation. In response, the NDMA has activated its Pak NDMA Disaster Alert application on both Google Play Store and iOS App Store to provide timely weather updates, advisories, and crucial guidelines to help the public prepare and respond effectively.

Residents are advised to secure their homes by sealing roofs and windows, clearing gutters and drainage systems, and securing loose outdoor items that could be affected by the storm. The NDMA also cautions against walking, swimming, or driving through floodwaters and urges the use of alternative routes to avoid flooded areas. Additional safety tips include being vigilant of open manholes and submerged obstacles, unplugging electrical appliances during heavy rains to prevent short circuits, and avoiding the handling of electrical equipment with wet hands. Relevant government departments have been instructed to take all necessary precautions to mitigate the impact of the expected adverse weather conditions.
