Karachi: Key Pakistani officials, including Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Federal Minister for Industry and Production Rana Tanveer, convened at the Chief Minister’s House to discuss significant initiatives aimed at reviving the nation’s industrial sector. Their primary focus was on the restoration of Pakistan Steel Mill and the establishment of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on adjacent land.
According to Chief Minister Sindh, “The proposed Special Economic Zone, spanning 4840 acres, will be developed using federal resources and is expected to be managed by Chinese investors. Discussions also included the potential rehabilitation or reconstruction of the steel mill on a reserved 700-acre portion of the site.” The plans aim to leverage the SEZ’s proximity to the sea, providing essential utilities like water and gas to make it one of the country’s leading economic zones.
The meeting underscored the mutual commitment of both provincial and federal governments to expedite the paperwork necessary for the immediate establishment of the SEZ, which promises to create employment opportunities and boost economic growth. Additionally, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah highlighted efforts to revitalize Pakistan Steel Mills under a public-private partnership, emphasizing the strategic use of this national asset to foster employment and economic advancement.
Murad Ali Shah also detailed his government’s broader economic strategy, which includes enhancing agricultural productivity through new crop cultivation methods, revitalizing the industrial sector, and expanding technical education to equip the youth for industrial roles, thereby strengthening the region’s agricultural economy.
