Karachi: Mayor of Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has urged for an acceleration in the construction of the Red Line Bus Corridor on University Road to alleviate the difficulties faced by commuters. This statement was made during a meeting with a delegation from the Asian Development Bank, emphasizing the significance of the project for the city’s transportation infrastructure.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the mayor discussed the legal frameworks and approvals required for the project, including the construction of a new station at Bagh-e-Karachi, which is pending City Council approval. He highlighted that the completion of the Red Line Bus Rapid System is crucial for providing modern transportation facilities to a significant number of Karachi residents. The meeting, held at the KMC’s head office, included a presentation by the 17-member Asian Development Bank delegation, led by Mr. Lloyd Wright, on the ongoing development of the project along University Road.
Mayor Wahab pointed out the strategic importance of University Road, which is frequented by a large number of daily commuters and houses several key governmental and private entities, including universities and the Expo Center. He stressed that the city cannot afford further delays in the project which is expected to significantly ease the daily commute. Additionally, the development of Bagh e Karachi was discussed, where a new City Council hall, capable of accommodating 500 members, will be constructed.
The project plans for Bagh e Karachi also include the creation of a large garden on 54 acres of former parkland, featuring a cricket area, children’s play area, a lake, a food court, and fiber optic facilities, enhancing the area’s appeal and utility. The design aims to integrate the new constructions with the natural environment, ensuring the preservation of the park’s lush landscape.
The mayor reassured the delegation of the KMC’s commitment to supporting the construction and timely completion of the Red Line Bus Rapid System. He also reflected on the broader need for such transportation projects in Karachi, citing their success in other major cities worldwide and emphasizing their role in improving urban mobility and quality of life for city dwellers.
