Islamabad: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, has pledged a series of maritime reforms aimed at enhancing safety, improving working conditions, and expanding career opportunities for Pakistan’s seafaring community.
In a message marking International Seafarers’ Day, Minister Chaudhry acknowledged the crucial role of seafarers in maintaining global economic stability, recognizing the personal and professional challenges they face at sea. He emphasized their unwavering commitment, particularly during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting their contribution to keeping international trade routes operational.
Minister Chaudhry lauded the resilience of Pakistani seafarers, whose efforts, he noted, have bolstered the nation’s reputation in global maritime sectors. He expressed pride in their dedication, which has been pivotal in elevating Pakistan’s standing internationally.
Addressing recent initiatives, the Minister detailed enhancements to the Seafarers’ Welfare Fund, which now provides greater support for families affected by seafaring-related injuries or fatalities. Additional measures include improved healthcare and educational access for seafarers and their families.
In collaboration with the International Maritime Organization, the Ministry has launched advanced training programs to boost emergency response skills and mental health awareness among maritime professionals. These initiatives aim to ensure Pakistani seafarers are well-equipped to meet global standards.
Minister Chaudhry underscored the importance of strategic partnerships with national and international maritime academies to deliver globally recognized training and certification, ensuring competitive edge for Pakistani seafarers.
Looking ahead, he outlined a strategic vision for Pakistan’s maritime future, which includes modernizing ports and shipyards, embracing digital transformation, and aligning with international environmental and safety standards.
The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of maritime workers, emphasizing a united effort to honor their contributions and build a resilient and inclusive maritime sector.
