Journalist Mohammed Zubair sent to police custody for 4 days

New Delhi, June 28, 2022 (PPI-OT): A Delhi court today extended by four days the custodial interrogation of Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair in a case related to an allegedly “objectionable tweet” he had posted in 2018. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Sarvaria passed the order after hearing arguments from Delhi police as well as Zubair. Police had sought an extension of Mr Zubair’s custody by five days.

Mohammed Zubair, the co-founder of fact-checking website Alt News, was arrested last night over a 2018 tweet, weeks after he called out BJP leader Nupur Sharma’s incendiary remarks on Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The tweet by Mohammed Zubair was “highly provocative and more than sufficient to incite feeling of hatred” among people, claims a Delhi Police First Information Report (FIR).
