Srinagar: The status of Jammu and Kashmir remains a recognized international dispute contrary to India’s claims that it is an internal issue. This conflict continues to feature prominently on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) agenda, reflecting its global significance and the ongoing international concerns surrounding the region.
According to Kashmir Media Service, experts reaffirm that the Kashmir issue remains a critical concern for the United Nations Security Council, supported by historical documents and treaties. This ongoing dispute between Pakistan and India has been a fixture on the UNSC agenda since 1948. The Security Council’s resolutions highlight the international nature of the Kashmir conflict, indicating that it extends beyond a mere bilateral issue between the two countries. The deployment of UN military observers in the region further underscores the international community’s recognition of the dispute’s broader implications.
Critics of India’s position on Kashmir argue that the nation cannot single-handedly decide to remove the issue from the UNSC agenda without addressing the Kashmiri people’s aspirations. They claim that the Indian government has actively suppressed the rights of Kashmiris to self-determination, a principle supported by various UN resolutions.
Experts point out that actions taken by the Modi government, especially following the revocation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, constitute violations of international law and defy UN resolutions. There are concerns about attempts to change the demographic makeup of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which are seen as efforts to solidify Indian control and compromise the possibilities for peace. The current elections in IIOJK are criticized as illegitimate, lacking the true essence of a self-determination process deserved by the Kashmiri populace.
The need for any dialogue about the future of Jammu and Kashmir to prioritize the region’s people’s aspirations is emphasized by experts. They advocate for a plebiscite, as outlined in UN resolutions, calling it an unmet yet valid demand. The refusal by India to consider this option is seen as a major obstacle to resolving the dispute.
The lack of international intervention is perceived as tacit support for India’s dominant strategies in South Asia, potentially leading to further instability in the region. Advocates stress that a fair and just resolution of the Kashmir dispute, in line with international norms, is essential for lasting peace in South Asia.
