Jam Kamal Khan, United States Trade Representative Discuss Bilateral Trade Expansion


Islamabad: In a strategic move to bolster trade ties, Jam Kamal Khan, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Commerce, engaged in a virtual dialogue with Katherine Tai, the United States Trade Representative. The discussion focused primarily on enhancing the bilateral trade relations between Pakistan and the U.S., with both parties expressing a keen interest in expanding their trade partnership.



According to Press Information Department, the meeting underscored Pakistan’s strong performance in the agricultural sector, particularly emphasizing the country’s exports of mangoes and dates. Jam Kamal highlighted these areas as key contributors to Pakistan’s economy, pointing out the potential for growth in value-added agro-services. On her part, Katherine Tai praised the quality of Pakistani agricultural products, noting the significant role they play in the trade dynamics between the two nations. She also brought attention to the potential for introducing U.S. beef exports to the Pakistani market, recognizing the substantial demand within the country.



The conversation also covered a range of mutual interests, with both sides agreeing to further strengthen their trade relations. It was confirmed during the discussion that the next Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) meeting would be scheduled soon. This upcoming meeting is expected to include discussions on a variety of sectors including agriculture, textiles, women’s empowerment, IT, and E-commerce.



Adding to the diplomatic exchange, Minister Jam Kamal extended an invitation to Katherine Tai to attend Pakistan’s TEXPO in October 2024. Tai expressed her gratitude for the invitation and showed interest in visiting Pakistan to explore further trade opportunities. Reciprocally, Tai invited Kamal to visit Washington, which would provide an additional platform for both parties to explore and expand trade possibilities.



The meeting between Jam Kamal Khan and Katherine Tai represents a significant step towards deepening the trade relationship between Pakistan and the United States, with both nations looking forward to productive engagements in the near future.
