Jain community in India protests against turning of religious place to tourist spot

Ranchi, December 22, 2022 (PPI-OT):The followers of Jain religion across India are protesting against the Jharkhand government’s decision of turning their religious place into a tourist spot. Jharkhand government has turned the Shri Sammed Shikharji, located in the Giridih district and one of the prominent Jain pilgrimage centres in India, into an eco-tourism spot. People of the Jain community all over the country are protesting against the government’s move. In the last week, protests were staged across a dozen of cities, and several Jain monks have demanded of the government roll back its decision.

The Jharkhand government decided to promote religious tourism at Parasnath Hills, the region that nestles the revered Jain pilgrimage centre, after the Tourism Policy launched in July, this year. Every year, lakhs of Jains from across the world visit the place. Besides, the hills are also considered holy by the members of the Santhal tribe, who regard it as ‘Marang Buru’ and hold an annual festival there in mid-April. Thousands of Jains, across India, observed a one-day strike on Wednesday to protest against the Jharkhand government’s decision.
