Islamabad: A delegation from the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), led by General Secretary Luc Triangle, met with Acting Speaker of the National Assembly, Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, at the Parliament House to discuss the strides Pakistan has made in democratic governance and labor rights. Commending Pakistan’s progress, Mr. Triangle emphasized the importance of robust democratic institutions for ensuring fundamental worker rights.
During the meeting, the Acting Speaker underscored the longstanding dedication of the Pakistan Peoples Party to protect workers’ rights and reiterated Parliament’s commitment to safeguarding these rights. He highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by the situation in neighboring Afghanistan, which continues to impact Pakistan’s economy, and noted the global challenge of terrorism, with Afghanistan as a focal point.
In his remarks, the Acting Speaker also discussed President Asif Ali Zardari’s decision to transfer his powers to the Parliament, which he suggested reinforces parliamentary democracy in the country. He pointed out climate change as Pakistan’s most urgent issue, citing a recent hailstorm in Islamabad as evidence of its severe impact.
Mr. Triangle acknowledged the role of democratic institutions in improving workplace conditions in Pakistan and stressed the significance of the Parliament as a foundation of elected democracy. He emphasized the ITUC’s commitment to labor rights and the freedom of association, recognizing the global challenge of climate change and its harsh impacts on Pakistan.
The delegation concluded its visit with a tour of the National Assembly Hall, further reinforcing the dialogue on democratic processes and labor rights.
