ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul (ITI) freight train service is set to resume by the end of 2025, Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi announced at a ceremony in Islamabad. The event marked the completion of renovation and upgradation work on the Golra Railway Station.
Minister Abbasi emphasized that enhancing regional connectivity remains a critical priority for Pakistan Railways amid ongoing modernization efforts. He also disclosed that an agreement has been reached to establish rail connectivity between Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
In a significant development, the Asian Development Bank has committed $2 billion to upgrade the railway track from Karachi to Rohri. This move aims to bolster the existing infrastructure, facilitating smoother operations and improved service delivery.
Abbasi highlighted the planned upgrade of the Nokundi to Rohri track, designed to expedite the transportation of minerals to various ports, further enhancing Pakistan’s trade capabilities.
Reforms in the railways are progressing with digitalization initiatives aligned with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision. The minister mentioned that Safe and Smart stations, cashless ticketing systems, and free Wi-Fi have been introduced through collaboration with the Frontier Works Organization and the Pakistan Information Technology Board.
Additionally, Abbasi pointed out that new technologies, including the Freight Online System, Rabta App, and 117 Call Centers, have been implemented to improve passenger convenience. He expressed optimism that these initiatives would position Pakistan Railways among the world’s modern railway networks.
