New Delhi, February 16, 2023 (PPI-OT):The raids and searches by India’s Income Tax department at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) offices continued for the third straight day, today (Thursday). The sleuths of IT department gathered financial data from select staffers and made copies of electronic and paper data of the news organization, reports said. The raids had started at the BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai on Tuesday. Earlier on Wednesday, some computer peripherals and mobile phones were cloned as part of the operation.
The raids came weeks after the BBC aired a documentary series exposing the role of Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat in 2002 when he was Chief Minister of the state. Last week, the Indian Supreme Court dismissed a plea seeking a complete ban on the BBC in India over its documentary on Modi. The court called the plea “entirely misconceived”. The Modi government had asked the social media platforms Twitter and YouTube to remove the links sharing the documentary titled “India: The Modi Question”.
