LAHORE, In a recent interactive session organized by the Pakistan Software Houses Association, Caretaker Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications Umar Saif praised the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) for its significant role in enhancing foreign direct investment in Pakistan. This commendation points to the growing importance of the IT sector in the country’s economic development.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Minister Umar Saif’s remarks came during a discussion that focused on the future prospects and current achievements of the IT industry in Pakistan. He highlighted the pivotal role of the SIFC in attracting foreign investment, an essential component for the nation’s economic growth and technological advancement.
Further delving into the IT sector’s progress, Saif underscored the anticipated benefits of establishing the Telecom Tribunal. He noted that this would expedite the resolution of disputes in the telecom industry, thereby fostering a more conducive environment for business and innovation.
In an ambitious move towards self-reliance, the Minister revealed the government’s goal to reduce the import of mobile phones. He emphasized promoting local manufacturing of affordable and high-quality cell phones, a step expected to bolster the domestic tech industry and provide economic benefits.
A noteworthy initiative mentioned by Saif is the standardized quality test for the 75,000 IT graduates in Pakistan. This test, scheduled to be conducted soon, aims to identify talented individuals who will be offered job placements through the Industry Placement Program, aligning education with industry demands.
Reflecting on the advancements in telecommunications, Saif expressed confidence that 5G services would be launched in Pakistan by July-August of the current year. He also mentioned the planned auction of a 300MHz spectrum, signaling a significant leap in the country’s digital infrastructure.
Highlighting the government’s focus on empowering freelancers and startups, Saif announced the establishment of 10,000 e-Rozgar centers across the country. These centers are envisioned to be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, offering a robust platform for emerging entrepreneurs and freelancers to thrive.
