Islamabad Observes World Braille Day, Advocates for Rights and Inclusion of Visually Impaired

Islamabad, Today, Pakistan joins the global community in observing World Braille Day, aimed at emphasizing the importance of improving access to knowledge for people with visual disabilities. This observance comes as part of an international effort to raise awareness and foster inclusivity.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the theme for World Braille Day 2024 is ‘Empowering Through Inclusion and Diversity.’ In a message marking the occasion, President Dr. Arif Alvi has reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities. He emphasized that Pakistan’s endorsement of the Marrakesh Treaty for visually impaired persons is a significant step towards helping them access millions of books in Braille.

In addition to international commitments, President Alvi highlighted Pakistan’s domestic efforts, such as initiating advanced training programs for students, educators, and parents. These programs are designed to facilitate an inclusive environment in public spaces, enabling smooth access to essential information and education for persons with visual impairments.

Simultaneously, Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi, speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad in commemoration of World Braille Day, has called upon political parties to include comprehensive plans for the welfare of differently-abled persons in their election manifestoes. Minister Solangi underscored the equal rights of differently-abled individuals, including the right to vote, and stressed the need for focused legislation to ensure their welfare.

This day of observance not only highlights the ongoing efforts in Pakistan to support and empower the visually impaired community but also serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to ensure inclusivity and diversity in all spheres of society.
