Islamabad Mourns the Loss of Professor Nazir Ahmed Shawl

Karachi, Today, a solemn gathering took place at Wani House in Islamabad, where dignitaries converged to pay homage to the late Kashmiri leader, Professor Nazir Ahmed Shawl. This congregation of eminent personalities reflected a deep sense of loss and respect for a figure revered for his contributions to the Kashmir freedom movement and human rights advocacy.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the assembly was graced by notable figures such as Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, a former federal minister, Sardar Naseem Khan, ex-Mayor of Rawalpindi, and Altaf Ahmed Butt, a senior Hurriyat leader. They expressed their deep condolences, remembering Professor Shawl as a visionary and a steadfast advocate for justice in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Professor Shawl, who passed away last Friday in London after a brief illness, was fondly remembered by Muhammad Hanif Abbasi. He lauded Shawl’s unwavering commitment to justice and self-determination, acknowledging the significant void his passing leaves in the political history of the region. “His departure leaves a void that will be felt deeply,” Abbasi remarked.

Sardar Naseem Khan paid his respects to Professor Shawl, highlighting his multifaceted contributions. “Professor Shawl was a gem of knowledge and a stalwart in the pursuit of Kashmir’s liberation. His intellectual prowess and dedication were unparalleled. His legacy will continue to inspire generations,” he said.

Altaf Ahmed Butt reflected on Professor Shawl’s legacy as a fearless human rights advocate and a beacon for the Kashmir cause. He emphasized that Shawl’s impact transcends borders and time, shaping the narrative for justice.

The dignitaries also met with Professor Shawl’s nephews, Mohiuddin Wani, Shahabuddin Wani, Moinuddin Wani, and other relatives, offering their condolences and sharing memories of the iconic figure. Born on October 13, 1946, in Baramulla, Professor Shawl’s life was celebrated for his diverse roles as an educator, poet, and human rights advocate. He held an undergraduate degree in sciences and a postgraduate degree in Botany from Kashmir University, Srinagar. Throughout his career, he served as a distinguished professor and researcher in Botany, making significant contributions to academia and the scientific community.

His activism extended to various roles, including a field advisor in science, coordinator for the UNICEF-assisted project PECR, a member of the Board of Undergraduate Studies at the Botany University of Kashmir, and Chief Test Administrator of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS-Bombay). As the chief editor of Kashmir Press International (KPI), he played a crucial role in highlighting the struggles in the region.

Professor Shawl also founded the South Asia Centre for Peace and Human Rights in London, reaffirming his commitment to peace and human rights advocacy. The outpouring of respect and condolences at Wani House underscored Professor Shawl’s significant impact on those dedicated to justice, self-determination, and human rights. His enduring legacy is set to inspire future generations in their quest for these ideals.
