Islamabad: International Literacy Day is being marked in Pakistan with a focus on “Promoting literacy in the digital era,” underscoring the significance of digital literacy in modern society. The observance aims to advance universal literacy through improved public policies and investments in education.

President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized the importance of empowering women and girls through education, noting that literacy investments contribute to healthier families and stronger economies. He highlighted the need to strengthen non-formal education, ensuring learning opportunities for all individuals regardless of their background.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif stressed the unity of federal and provincial governments in enhancing education and literacy. He pointed out that the national literacy campaign aims to provide basic and higher education, along with technical skills, to all children.

Both leaders called for the active involvement of teachers, parents, and citizens in eradicating illiteracy, which they see as foundational to Pakistan’s progress and development.
