Islamabad, The Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, in collaboration with the National Heritage and Culture Division and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, organized a special event to mark the 100th anniversary of Shaikh Ayaz, a renowned poet and intellectual. The event, which celebrated Ayaz’s significant contributions to Pakistan’s democratic journey and intellectual awakening, was attended by Federal Ministers Madad Ali Sindhi, Murtaza Solangi, and Jamal Shah.
According to Press Information Department, Minister Madad Ali Sindhi, while addressing the occasion, emphasized Shaikh Ayaz’s pivotal role in shaping the democratic norms and advocating for human rights in Pakistan, particularly in Sindh. He highlighted Ayaz’s resilience and dedication during oppressive times, noting his multiple imprisonments due to his steadfast commitment to his ideals.
Shaikh Ayaz, remembered as a revolutionary and romantic poet, was a prominent figure in Sindhi literature and a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Sindh. He authored over 50 works, including poetry, biographies, plays, and short stories in both Sindhi and Urdu. His notable translation of “Shah Jo Risalo,” written by the 18th-century Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif, from Sindhi to Urdu, established him as a literary authority. Ayaz received the prestigious Sitara-i-Imtiaz for his literary contributions and is revered for filling the political representation void in Sindh through his revolutionary poetry.
The event also acknowledged the establishment of Shaikh Ayaz University in 2018, named in his honor, signifying his enduring legacy in Pakistan’s history, particularly in the context of democracy in Sindh and his contributions to the Sindhi language.
