Islamabad Commemorates World Day Against Trafficking with Focus on Child Protection

Islamabad: Stakeholders from international organizations and the Government of Pakistan convened on July 30, 2024, to reaffirm their commitment to combating human trafficking, particularly focusing on safeguarding children. The event, held in observance of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, underscored the need for enhanced collaborative efforts to protect the most vulnerable from exploitation.

According to United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the commemorative event was organized by a coalition of entities including the UNODC, the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO), in partnership with Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). The global theme for the year, “Leave no child behind in the fight against human trafficking,” reflects a concerted push to address the dire circumstances faced by children who represent a substantial portion of trafficking victims worldwide.

The gathering highlighted various initiatives and shared strategies aimed at combating this issue. Speakers included high-level representatives from each organizing body who discussed the importance of protecting children’s rights and dignity in the fight against trafficking. They also emphasized the need for integrated approaches that prioritize child protection and enhance legal frameworks and victim support mechanisms.

The event also served as a platform for the announcement of new policies and the introduction of enhanced collaborative efforts, including the expansion of legal migration channels and the strengthening of international partnerships to combat child trafficking effectively.
