Islamabad, The Islamabad Capital Police announced substantial progress in crime control and law enforcement for the year 2023. Under the guidance of the Islamabad Capital City Police Officer, Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan, the department implemented various measures resulting in the arrest of 23,928 suspects and the recovery of cash and valuables worth Rs. 2.49 billion.
According to Islamabad Capital Police, these achievements were made possible through several key reforms and initiatives. These included enhancing the capacity of station police officers, establishing a Court Compliance Unit, and creating an Anti-Robbery and Dacoity Unit. A significant reform in 2023 was the establishment of the Police Bureau of Investigation, which separated investigative and operational duties at the station level.
Specialized units for investigating crimes against women and children, combating robbery and dacoity, implementing court orders, and ensuring electronic attendance of suspects in courts contributed to the effectiveness of the investigation unit. Additionally, the introduction of the Dolphin Emergency Response Unit significantly reduced police response times.
In line with government directives, the police conducted operations against illegal resident foreigners, repatriating over 10,000 individuals to their home countries. Among the arrests made in 2023, 6,614 were members of criminal gangs involved in financial crimes, and 2,061 individuals were apprehended for robbery and theft. The police also arrested 1,947 individuals for illegal weapon possession, confiscating a substantial number of firearms and ammunition.
The new specialized investigation units played a crucial role in investigating serious crimes. In 2023, the courts passed judgments on 35 murder cases, with 20 death sentences and 15 life imprisonments, marking an unprecedented number of rulings in such cases.
A total of 24,326 cases were registered across police stations in Islamabad in 2023, with investigations completed on 20,148 cases. The remaining 4,178 cases are still under proceedings. The Islamabad Capital Police emphasized their commitment to transparency, merit, and justice in their operations.
The police force also recognized the sacrifices of officers and personnel who demonstrated exceptional courage, some of whom were honored as martyrs and Ghazis. The statement concluded with a call for increased cooperation between citizens and the police, emphasizing the collective effort required to maintain peace in the city.
