Islamabad, In a strategic move to combat the rising menace of cybercrime, the Islamabad Capital Police has inaugurated a specialized Cyber Crime Investigation Unit. This initiative, under the guidance of Islamabad Capital City Police Officer Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan, aims to enhance the city’s defenses against digital fraud and deception.
According to Islamabad Capital Police, the unit was established following the enactment of recent amendments to the PECA Act, allowing for more robust action against cyber offenses. Since its inception on January 15, 2024, the Cyber Crime Unit, with the support of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), has undertaken significant steps, including the registration of cases involving online fraud and embezzlement under the amended legal framework.
The unit has processed numerous applications from residents reporting cyber incidents, with a substantial number being thoroughly investigated and actioned. The efforts are part of a broader strategy to adapt to the evolving landscape of crime, recognizing the increasing significance of cybersecurity and the need for specialized expertise in this area.
The Cyber Crime Investigation Unit operates out of the F-6 Police Khidmat Markaz and is staffed by personnel trained in digital forensics, reflecting a collaborative approach with the FIA to strengthen Islamabad’s capacity to address cyber threats. Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan emphasized the Police’s commitment to this cause, noting that citizens now have the facility to report cyber-related offenses at any police station across the capital, ensuring a more accessible and responsive mechanism for tackling such crimes.
