Islamabad Calls for Resolution of Kashmir Issue, Upholds Right to Self-Determination, says Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf

Islamabad, Speaker of the National Assembly Raja Pervez Ashraf has emphasized the importance of resolving the Kashmir issue in line with United Nations resolutions, citing it as essential for sustainable peace in the region. His statement, issued on the occasion of Kashmir’s Right to Self-Determination Day, underlines Pakistan’s commitment to the Kashmiri cause.

According to National Assembly of Pakistan, the Speaker stressed that the right to self-determination is a fundamental aspect of human dignity. He called upon the international community to honour its commitments and responsibilities concerning the rights of the people of Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Ashraf highlighted the peaceful movement of the Kashmiri people for their right to self-determination and backed the resolution of the Kashmir issue in accordance with the Kashmiri people’s aspirations and the United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Ashraf reminded the international community of its obligations, particularly on January 5, marking the anniversary of the 1949 United Nations Commission on India and Pakistan (UNCIP) resolution. This resolution guarantees a free and fair referendum for the people of Jammu and Kashmir to exercise their right to self-determination.

The Speaker condemned the reported atrocities committed by India in Occupied Kashmir, describing the region as facing the worst situation from the occupying Indian forces and likening it to the world’s biggest open-air prison. He accused India of altering the demographic structure of the occupied region, violating international laws and the Fourth Geneva Convention. Ashraf reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the Jammu and Kashmir people’s efforts to realize their right to self-determination, in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Further, Ashraf drew parallels between the situations in Kashmir and Palestine, noting the oppression faced by both peoples for decades. He criticized the recent Israeli army shelling in Palestine, alleging it has paralyzed life and resulted in numerous civilian casualties. The Speaker called on the United Nations and the international community to intervene and halt the atrocities against Muslims in Kashmir and Palestine.

The Speaker’s statement reiterates Pakistan’s stance on the Kashmir issue and reflects its ongoing commitment to advocating for the rights of the Kashmiri people on international platforms.
