Islamabad: The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) hosted a significant event to launch Ms. Naz Parveen’s book “Xinjiang ke Khushal Uyghur,” which portrays a positive narrative of Uyghur life in China’s Xinjiang region, countering widespread Western narratives. The event, organized by the China-Pakistan Study Centre (CPSC), featured distinguished speakers and was highlighted by the attendance of Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed as the chief guest.

According to Press Information Department, the book launch at ISSI drew an audience that included top academics, diplomats, and civil society members. Speakers at the event lauded Ms. Parveen’s work for its insightful portrayal of Xinjiang, based on her extensive travels and interactions in cities like Kashgar and Urumqi. The discussion centered not only on the content of the book but also on the broader implications of cultural diplomacy between Pakistan and China.

Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director General of ISSI, set the tone by acknowledging the deep-rooted friendship and strategic partnership between Pakistan and China, enhanced by initiatives like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). He praised Ms. Parveen for her role in fostering a deeper understanding of Chinese culture through her writings and direct engagements at China Window in Peshawar.

Dr. Azhar Ahmed and Ms. Nabila Jaffer both highlighted how the book serves as an educational tool that transports readers to Xinjiang, offering a vivid, firsthand look at the region contrary to the often negative portrayals in Western media.

Ms. Naz Parveen shared her motivations for writing the book, driven by a desire to present a more nuanced and positive picture of the Uyghur community, which she believes is misrepresented globally. Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed closed the session by applauding Ms. Parveen’s efforts and criticizing the biased perspectives frequently disseminated by Western outlets. He called for more such works to enhance mutual understanding and strengthen the ties between Pakistan and China.
