‘Is truth unparliamentary?’ Indian Opposition fumes at Parliament’s gag order

New Delhi, July 14, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Congress and Trinamool Congress have slammed the censor order on usage of certain words in the Indian Parliament, saying all terms used by the Opposition to describe the Modi dispensation will now to be considered unparliamentary.

A new booklet issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat says the use of terms like ‘jumlajeevi’, ‘baal buddhi’, ‘Covid spreader’ and ‘Snoopgate’ and even commonly used words like ‘ashamed’, ‘abused, ‘betrayed’, ‘corrupt’, ‘drama’, ‘hypocrisy’ and ‘incompetent’ will henceforth be considered unparliamentary in the both houses of the Indian parliament – Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

The booklet, that comes ahead of the Monsoon session beginning Monday, says words like ‘anarchist’, ‘Shakuni’, ‘dictatorial’, ‘taanashah’, ‘taanashahi’, ‘Jaichand’, ‘vinash purush and ‘Khalistani’ would also be expunged if used during debates or otherwise.

Slamming the move, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh today said, “All words used by the Opposition to describe the reality of Modi Sarkar now to be considered unparliamentary”. Another Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said, “Saheb [apparently referring to Modi] knows his qualities very well”.

Lashing out at the government’s decision, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien said, “Session begins in a few days. Gag order issued on MPs. Now, we will not be allowed to use these basic words while delivering a speech in Parliament: Ashamed. Abused. Betrayed. Corrupt. Hypocrisy. Incompetent. I will use all these words. Suspend me. Fighting for democracy,” he said. Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra attacked the BJP government for selecting words used by Opposition “to describe how BJP destroying India and banned them”.

Another Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill said on Twitter, “Latest list of banned words in Parliament is BJP Govt’s desperate attempt to control criticism and hard hitting truth.” “BJP Government wants Parliament to turn into ‘yes man’ chamber and ‘cheerleading stadium’ rather than house of accountability and answerability,” he also said.
