IPO-Pakistan Promotes Intellectual Property Awareness at University of Baltistan


SKARDU: In an effort to enhance awareness of intellectual property rights across Pakistan, IPO-Pakistan organized a consultative session at the University of Baltistan, Skardu. The session focused on the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) treaty concerning Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources, and Traditional Knowledge (GR&TK). It aimed to foster understanding and build consensus among research community stakeholders.



The event was chaired by IPO-Pakistan Chairperson, Ambassador (r) Farukh Amil, and University of Baltistan Vice Chancellor Naeem Tariq Narejo. Attendees included students, faculty members, researchers, and representatives from business and local communities in the Baltistan region.



Vice Chancellor Narejo emphasized the importance of intellectual property and praised IPO-Pakistan’s efforts in promoting it nationally. He highlighted Baltistan’s unique biodiversity and its potential for local communities to benefit from genetic resources. He expressed full support for the university joining the GRATK Treaty to enhance business opportunities for the region.



Chairperson Amil underscored the significance of reaching out to stakeholders nationwide, correcting misconceptions about Gilgit-Baltistan’s remoteness by describing it as a gateway in global economic pathways. He stressed the importance of protecting genetic resources and traditional knowledge, stating the treaty represented a significant advancement for the Global South.



Director GRTKF, Muhammad Ismail, underscored the need to map and protect Pakistan’s genetic resources to prevent misappropriation. Assistant Director Zafar Iqbal’s presentation on intellectual property rights sparked enthusiasm, particularly among students.



Dr. Shafqat Hussain from the University of Baltistan’s ORIC office highlighted the role of IP rights in promoting entrepreneurial activity and creating a knowledge-based economy. The session concluded with a lively Q&A, with participants expressing support for Pakistan joining the GRATK Treaty to secure genetic resources for local economic empowerment.
