Imphal: The suspension of internet services in Manipur has been extended until November 23 across seven districts as authorities aim to curb the spread of potentially inflammatory content amid increasing violence in the region. The extension comes after an initial two-day suspension was enacted to prevent anti-social elements from exacerbating the situation.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Manipur administration originally suspended internet services to address concerns over law and order issues. The affected districts include Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, and Kangpokpi. The state government decided to continue the suspension following a review of the prevailing circumstances.
In related developments, Manipur Police have detained five individuals during recent search operations conducted in both hill and valley districts. The actions are part of broader efforts to maintain peace and order in the area.
A statement from the Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust (KOHUR) condemned all forms of violence against communities, including a recent incident involving the killing of a Meitei family. The group questioned the timing of violence incidents, noting a pattern of escalation during hearings related to Chief Minister Biren Singh in the Supreme Court.
Additionally, Taragi Cheisu, a Meitei foundation, condemned the killings in Jiribam, describing them as violations of International Humanitarian Laws and Indian law. The organization also called for justice for a Hmar woman killed in Jiribam on November 7, urging equal justice for victims across communities.
