Islamabad: The International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples was observed on Sunday with a focus on the crucial role of indigenous midwives in safeguarding life and well-being. This year’s theme, “Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being,” highlights the essential contributions of these caregivers in preserving health within indigenous communities.
According to Radio Pakistan, the day serves as a reminder of the vast diversity and cultural richness of Indigenous Peoples, who number approximately 476 million across 90 countries and encompass around 5,000 distinct cultures. The observance aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by these communities and to promote their rights and cultural heritage. The role of indigenous midwives is underscored as vital in maintaining the well-being and continuity of their cultures.
