International Day of Sign Languages Celebrated with Focus on Linguistic Rights

Islamabad: Today marks the observance of the International Day of Sign Languages, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of sign language in the preservation and promotion of the cultural diversity and linguistic identity of deaf communities around the world. This year’s theme, “Sign up for Sign Language Rights,” emphasizes the need for greater recognition and support for the rights of sign language users.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the International Day of Sign Languages offers a critical platform for advocating the linguistic rights and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users. The day serves as a reminder of the significant role that sign languages play in full and effective communication, as well as in the inclusion of deaf people in all aspects of society.

This annual observance underscores the ongoing efforts to support and protect the rights of the deaf community, advocating for equal opportunities in all areas of life, including access to education, healthcare, and employment. By focusing on “Sign up for Sign Language Rights,” the campaign calls for immediate action to foster an inclusive atmosphere where sign language users can freely use their native language and participate fully in their communities.
