Interior Ministry Addresses Security Measures and Delay in Poll Results

Islamabad, In response to concerns over the delay in election results, the Interior Ministry has stated that the suspension of cellular services was a necessary measure to ensure the safety and security of citizens following terrorist incidents just a day before the polls. Interior Minister Dr. Gohar Ejaz Khan emphasized the priority of public safety over timely poll results, explaining the suspension served to prevent terrorists from communicating and coordinating attacks.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Dr. Khan highlighted the challenges faced in ensuring a peaceful election process amidst a surge in terrorism. Credible threats from terrorist groups such as TTP, Daesh, and foreign-sponsored militants in Balochistan necessitated extraordinary security measures. These included the deployment of hundreds of thousands of security personnel in difficult weather conditions on short notice and conducting bomb disposal clearances in sensitive areas, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Such precautions, though causing delays in the delivery of poll results, were crucial for safeguarding the democratic process.

The Interior Minister called for understanding and cooperation from citizens and political leaders, urging them to allow election staff to complete their duties without hindrance and to avoid actions that could further delay the electoral process. Dr. Khan also expressed satisfaction with the general acceptance of the election results by major political entities, indicating the elections were conducted fairly and freely.

Dr. Khan praised the efforts of all institutions involved in the electoral process, especially the Election Commission of Pakistan, which operated under limited control over the security situation. He stressed that these entities deserve recognition and gratitude for their contribution to the successful conduct of the elections, rather than criticism.
