Interior Minister Naqvi Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Activities in Pakistan

Islamabad: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi chaired a significant meeting of the Counter-Terrorism Committee and Harden the State Committee, focusing on accelerating operations against illegal foreign nationals, electricity theft, and the beggar mafia in Pakistan.

The meeting underscored the need for coordinated efforts among federal and provincial agencies to implement the “One Document Regime” aimed at tightening border controls and verifying identities. The Interior Minister announced that NADRA would equip exit points with live data verification facilities to strengthen these efforts.

Naqvi highlighted the impact of the beggar mafia on the country’s image and advocated for declaring begging a non-bailable offense. In a bid to curtail electricity theft, he assured that the Ministry of Energy and provincial governments were receiving necessary support.

During the meeting, a Ministry of Energy representative revealed that cooperative efforts had led to the recovery of Rs. 142 billion. It was noted that over 250 intelligence-based operations are conducted daily to tackle various illegal activities.

The session also reviewed initiatives related to anti-encroachment, the establishment of the Pakistan Port Authority, and safety projects in Gwadar City. Updates were provided on digital enforcement stations on the Indus River and the ongoing Intelligent Transportation System for monitoring motorways.

Progress in digitizing petrol pumps to prevent the sale of smuggled fuel was examined. Under a new law, customs officers and deputy commissioners will be empowered to seal petrol pumps and confiscate vehicles involved in illegal fuel transactions.

The meeting was attended by several notable figures, including Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry, Punjab Law Minister Sohaib Ahmed Bharti, and other high-ranking officials from security and government agencies.
