Interfaith Harmony Marks Ashura Observance in Srinagar


Srinagar: Ashura, the solemn commemoration of Imam Hussain’s martyrdom, was observed in Srinagar with a remarkable display of interfaith harmony, as Hindu community members actively participated by serving refreshments to the Shia mourners.



According to Kashmir Media Service, the day, which marks the historical event of Karbala where Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of the Holy Prophet of Islam, was martyred, saw widespread participation from different communities in Srinagar, IIOJK, this Wednesday. The procession brought together Shia and Sunni Muslims in Zadibal, showcasing a profound unity among the communities. Additionally, the longstanding harmonious relationship between Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs in the region was vividly evident throughout the event.



Ashok Kumar, a Kashmiri Pandit present at the observance, spoke about the universal impact of Ashura, emphasizing that the martyrdom of Imam Hussain transcends religious boundaries and offers a message of unity and tolerance. Kumar expressed his commitment to fostering interfaith unity, underscoring the importance of maintaining brotherhood and countering divisive forces in society.



The main mourning procession in Srinagar commenced at Bota Kadal Lal Bazar and concluded in Zadibal, with numerous smaller processions occurring in other Shia-majority areas across the valley. These events not only reflect the rich tapestry of communal life in Kashmir but also affirm the enduring relevance of the Karbala tragedy, symbolizing courage and the ethical triumph of truth over falsehood.
