Information Minister Calls for Media Adherence to Election Code of Conduct

Islamabad, Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Murtaza Solangi, has urged the mainstream media to rigorously follow the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) code of conduct in the lead-up to the upcoming general elections.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Solangi addressed these remarks at a seminar titled Electoral Code of Conduct: Ethical Practices of Stakeholders including Media, organized by the Press Information Department in Islamabad. He highlighted that the ECP’s code of conduct, available in both English and Urdu, is a critical guideline for ethical media practices during the election period.

Solangi expressed concerns about speculations around the elections, affirming the government’s stance that the elections would take place on February 8th. He reiterated the consensus for maintaining a federal parliamentary democratic system in Pakistan and the possibility of its improvement through legislation, emphasizing that democracy is fundamentally for the people.

The Information Minister acknowledged the mainstream media’s compliance but pointed out challenges posed by the digital media landscape. He noted that certain elements, both within and outside the country, seek to create instability and chaos. To address these challenges, departments like the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) must remain vigilant.

Secretary Information and Broadcasting, Shahera Shahid, also emphasized the significance of the electoral code of conduct, underlining its role in ensuring operational guidelines and the safety and security of the public.

Press Information Officer Tariq Mahmood mentioned that a series of seminars are being organized to raise awareness about the general elections. A spokesperson from the Election Commission of Pakistan clarified that the code of conduct was developed after extensive consultations with political parties. It includes provisions against hate speech and sets limits on election expenditures for candidates.

Participants at the seminar stressed the importance of implementing the electoral code of conduct, highlighting its role in ensuring a fair and transparent election process.
