Islamabad: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has identified fake and unverified news as a significant challenge of the contemporary digital era, emphasizing the necessity for robust verification mechanisms prior to information dissemination.

According to Radio Pakistan, Tarar made these remarks at the 29th Sustainable Development Conference organized by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute. He underscored the universal challenge posed by fake news and announced the establishment of a Digital Communication Department within the Ministry to ensure the distribution of verified information.

Tarar advocated for the positive use of artificial intelligence, suggesting that AI labelling, along with suitable regulatory and legal frameworks, is crucial for managing social media content. He noted the progression from electronic media to the expansion of digital media on social platforms, calling for similar regulatory oversight for these platforms.

He clarified the government’s stance on freedom of speech, asserting that while there are no restrictions, it is imperative that this freedom does not infringe upon the rights of others.

Referring to an incident termed Marka-e-Haq, Tarar commended the Pakistani media’s responsible conduct in countering misinformation disseminated by Indian media and praised Generation Z for their adept use of social media during the event.

Tarar concluded by stressing the importance of introducing digital media courses and raising public awareness about the potential misuse of social media and AI.
