India’s Controversial Elections in Kashmir Begin Amid Accusations of Manipulation and Occupation

Srinagar: The first phase of what has been labeled as sham elections in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) commenced today, amid severe criticism and accusations of the electoral process being a facade for military oppression. Observers and local inhabitants have dismissed the elections as a mere “military drill,” undermining the democratic essence of the polls.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the elections are being conducted under the watchful eyes of over a million Indian troops. Allegations have surfaced suggesting that the electoral process has been heavily manipulated to benefit pro-India parties, involving strategic reforms and gerrymandering aimed at reducing Muslim representation in the region.

The elections have drawn widespread condemnation from various analysts and experts who criticize New Delhi for using the elections as a tool to legitimize its control over IIOJK. The local population has expressed a strong preference for a UN-sanctioned plebiscite rather than participating in what they consider rigged polls. Furthermore, the extension of voting rights to non-residents has sparked serious concerns about the dilution of the political and demographic status of Kashmiris.

In a strong rebuke of the electoral process, Kashmiri leaders have boycotted the elections, denouncing them as a stratagem to validate India’s dominion over the region. They argue that the elections divert attention from the Kashmiris’ ongoing fight for self-determination.

Political analysts warn that the elections may intensify divisions within the territory, potentially escalating tensions between the local Kashmiri population and the Indian government. They fear that the elections could damage the social and cultural fabric of Kashmir, exacerbating the already volatile situation.

The current electoral strategy by the Modi government is also seen as an attempt to further legitimize the controversial 2019 repeal of Kashmir’s special status. Critics urge the international community to recognize the real situation in IIOJK and support the Kashmiris’ quest for self-determination.
