New Delhi: The Indian Supreme Court has dismissed a legal challenge against the election of Amritpal Singh, a jailed Sikh preacher, as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Khadoor Sahib constituency in Punjab.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the challenge was based on the qualifications for membership as outlined in Article 84 of the Indian Constitution, which requires that a member of Parliament must be a citizen of India and owe allegiance to the Constitution. The petitioner, who represented themselves in court, argued that Singh had explicitly stated his non-allegiance to the Constitution of India, thus disqualifying him from serving in Parliament. However, the bench, comprising Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan, rejected these claims, allowing Singh to retain his parliamentary seat.
