Indian Police Accused of Killing Muslim Youth in Uttarakhand

Dehradun: A Muslim youth was reportedly killed by police in Uttarakhand, with allegations pointing to a brutal encounter involving accusations of carrying cow meat. The incident occurred in the Roorkee area of Haridwar district, a region governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

According to Kashmir Media Service, 24-year-old Wasim was assaulted by police officers and subsequently thrown into a pond. His brother, Alauddin, who filed a complaint at the Kotwali police station in Gangnahar, detailed the attack that took place near Madhopur village as Wasim was returning from his sister’s home. Alauddin named three officers — Sharad Singh, Sunil Saini, and Praveen Saini — in addition to three unidentified policemen, as the assailants.

Alauddin’s complaint stated that the police stopped Wasim near a graveyard, assaulted him without cause, and threw him into a pond, preventing others from helping him. Despite attempts to rescue him, the police allegedly threatened to shoot the bystanders and ordered them to leave the scene. Alauddin also reported to media that Wasim had sustained multiple injuries, including cuts on his face, a torn eye, a damaged nose, and bruising on his head.

The incident has sparked tension in the area, and in a related event, a Hindutva leader was detained in Uttar Pradesh for attempting to disgrace a mosque by performing ‘Aarti’ at its steps, escalating communal tensions in the region.
