Indian-Origin Candidates Disqualified from Liberal Party Race Amid Canada-India Tensions

Toronto: Amid escalating tensions between Canada and India, three Indian-origin candidates, Ruby Dhalla, Chandra Arya, and Viresh Bansal, have been disqualified from the Liberal Party leadership race. The expulsions come as Canada accuses India of attempting to assassinate its citizens on Canadian soil.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, the Liberal Party cited allegations of anti-Sikh sentiments, homophobia, and support for foreign interference by India as the reasons for barring these candidates from the race to become the next Prime Minister. The decision underscores Canada’s concerns over India’s increasing influence in diaspora politics, which some fear could exacerbate ethnic divisions abroad.

Critics argue that India’s Hindutva ideology is shaping global narratives, raising concerns about potential meddling in democratic processes. The disqualification of the candidates reflects broader anxieties about how India’s nationalist agendas may impact democratic norms internationally.

The move highlights the challenges Western nations face in engaging with their diasporas while ensuring the integrity of democratic processes. As Canada navigates its relationship with India, the decision serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between diaspora engagement and safeguarding democratic values.
