Indian MP terms crackdown on PFI “anti-Muslim”, “anti-democratic”

Srinagar, September 23, 2022 (PPI-OT):Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief and Member of Indian Parliament from Tamil Nadu, Thol Thirumavalavan, has condemned the massive crackdown by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) on the Muslim organization, Popular Front of India (PFI) and arrests of its top leaders.

Thol Thirumavalavan called the actions of Indian agencies “hate against minorities” and “anti-democratic.”

The vocal Dalit leader said, Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) are the movements openly operated in a democratic way. Though the main leadership and cadres of PFI and SDPI belonging to Muslims, the organisations have been working for the welfare of all marginalised communities, he said.

He deplored that since coming to power, the BJP has been trying to alienate these two movements, labelling them “terrorist groups.” According to Thirumavalavan, BJP government wants to suppress the alternative political movements. “Hundreds have been arrested in the recent raids. Such actions are not only against Muslims but against all democratic powers,” he said.

Thol Thirumavalavan and his party asked the BJP government to abandon this kind of minority hate politics.

The NIA and the ED Thursday arrested at least 100 leaders of Popular Front of India and eminent Muslim figures as part of the searches conducted at the PFI’s offices and houses of state and district level leaders across 11 states. Arrests were made from Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
