Islamabad, The Narendra Modi-led Indian government’s recent move to pass two bills in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s Parliament, concerning Jammu and Kashmir has drawn sharp criticism. These legislations are seen as attempts to alter the demographic and political landscape of the Muslim-majority region, in violation of United Nations resolutions.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the passage of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill and the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha is perceived as a strategy to politically and economically weaken the Muslim population of the occupied territory. The Reorganisation Bill aims to increase non-Muslim representation in the assembly by adding three seats for the Kashmiri Pandit community and displaced persons from Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The Reservation Bill redefines the criteria for eligibility in appointments and admissions, giving more opportunities to various communities, including non-Muslims.
The report argues that these legislative changes are part of a broader agenda by Hindutva forces to install a Hindu Chief Minister in Jammu and Kashmir. It claims that the BJP government is attempting to disempower Kashmiri Muslims by giving more legislative and institutional power to other communities, a move that aligns with the long-standing ambitions of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the BJP to transform the region’s Muslim identity.
The Kashmir Media Service report also recalls the BJP-led Indian government’s controversial decision in August 2019 to revoke Article 370, which provided special status to Jammu and Kashmir. This move is seen as another step in the government’s ongoing efforts to marginalize Kashmiri Muslims.
The report calls on the United Nations to intervene and prevent the Modi regime from further violating UN resolutions regarding the Kashmir dispute. It emphasizes the need for international action to halt what it describes as the fascist plans of the Indian government in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
