New Delhi, September 13, 2023 (PPI-OT): A tense hours-long standoff unfolded at a hotel in Delhi last week, as security personnel accused the Chinese delegation, attending the G20 Summit, of having ‘suspicious equipment’.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the ordeal began when the security team of Taj Palace Hotel observed a member of the Chinese delegation carrying a bag with “unusual dimensions”. The situation took an ugly turn when a hotel employee, while attending to one of the delegation’s rooms, claimed of spotting “suspicious equipment” concealed within two bags.
Officials from the hotel demanded of the Chinese delegation members to submit their bags for a routine scan. However, as per reports, the delegation members vehemently rejected the demand, leading to a prolonged standoff.
Indian media quoting sources privy to the situation reported that the impasse lasted for approximately 12 hours, with the Chinese officials refusing to allow their bags to be subjected to scanning procedures. During this time, the delegation members were not allowed to move out of their room. Ultimately, a resolution was reached when the Chinese delegation agreed to send the bags in question to their embassy.
The incident seems to be an attempt by the Indian authorities to give vent to their frustration caused by the refusal of the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, to attend the G20 Summit. While the exact nature of the “suspicious equipment” remains undisclosed, the incident highlights the mistreatment of the visiting delegations by the Indian authorities.
