ISLAMABAD, Amidst reports suggesting India’s involvement in state-backed terrorism in Canada, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is set to raise queries with the Modi-led Indian government about the alleged targeting of non-profit organizations for prosecution.
According to Kashmir Media Service, this matter will be broached during the FATF’s special review of India, referred to as the “mutual review”, which might occur this month. Following the FATF Plenary Committee meeting on October 27, the decision was made to ask the Indian administration to provide details regarding measures related to non-profit organizations. The American Bar Association’s Centre for Human Rights recently examined five cases involving Indian NPOs and human rights advocates. The study insinuated the potential misuse of counter-terrorism financing legislation to target those defending human rights and limit civic space. The report has urged the Indian government to reconsider its application of counter-terrorism laws, emphasizing the potential harm to India’s global counter-terrorism partnership reputation.
