India Supreme Court to hear petition on assembly polls in IIOJK on Thursday

New Delhi, July 04, 2023 (PPI-OT): Indian Supreme Court has listed the hearing for the writ petition regarding the immediate assembly elections in occupied Jammu Kashmir on Thursday (July 06). The petition filed by former IIOJK minister and advocate Harsh Dev Singh sought the court’s intervention in restoring the democratic process in the territory. The Chief Justice of India will lead the bench hearing the case.

Singh expressed concern over the Indian government and the Election Commission of India’s lack of response on the matter, prompting him to approach the India’s highest court. He emphasised that delaying the elections would undermine democracy and contravene the orders of the Supreme Court. It is worth mentioning here that India had always rigged the elections in IIOJK, and the last assembly elections were held in 2014. The region has been without an elected legislature since 2018.
