Srinagar: In anticipation of India’s Independence Day, security measures have been significantly tightened across the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir, with special focus on the main celebration event at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the event in Srinagar will be overseen by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, while in Jammu, the celebrations at M.A. Stadium will be managed by LG’s Advisor R.R. Bhatnagar. This escalation in security comes amidst calls from the All Parties Hurriyat Conference for a boycott of the celebrations by the local populace, highlighting ongoing resistance in the region.
Security forces have increased their presence, particularly in Srinagar, establishing a heavy security presence. Measures include intensified frisking at various checkpoints, especially along major highways like the Srinagar-Jammu and Srinagar-Baramulla routes. The heightened security protocol involves armed personnel and undercover officers around event venues, sharpshooters positioned on high-rise buildings, and comprehensive ground and aerial surveillance.
Residents and commuters face rigorous security checks, including frisking and mandatory identity verification at multiple checkpoints throughout the city, which has been strategically divided into sectors and zones for effective monitoring. Anti-sabotage teams are actively checking venues, with ongoing searches in adjacent areas to preempt any security threats.
These security arrangements are similarly enforced in Jammu and other district headquarters throughout the region, indicating a broad and stringent security strategy across Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
