India Introduces New Lawyers’ Association in Kashmir to Counteract Local Bar Association

Srinagar: In a significant development, the Indian government has established the Kashmir Advocates’ Association (KAA) in an effort to undermine the Kashmir Bar Association (KBA), a group long known for its advocacy towards a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the KBA has historically been a vocal opponent of India’s policies in the region, particularly concerning human rights issues. The Indian regime, led by Narendra Modi, has previously banned elections within the KBA, restricting its functions. The newly formed KAA has been officially recognized by India’s judiciary in the region, a move seen by many as an attempt to dilute the influence of the KBA and silence its members’ dissenting voices.

This strategic establishment of the KAA is viewed as part of broader efforts by the Indian government to consolidate control in the contested region by suppressing opposition and limiting freedoms of expression and association. Observers and international bodies have been called upon to recognize and address these developments as they impact the fundamental rights of the Kashmiri people.
