Srinagar: Indian authorities have intensified restrictions in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) on the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, a move that has been widely criticized as a violation of the UN mandate on the disputed territory.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the increased security measures are aimed at preventing rallies, protests, and seminars against India’s action on August 5, 2019. The heightened military presence and additional checkpoints along the Jammu-Srinagar highway underscore India’s ongoing occupation and its disregard for international law.
The UN designates Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed territory, and actions taken by India to alter its status are seen as violations of UN resolutions. The revocation of Article 370, which had granted special status to the region, has been condemned by the international community and has led to a marked increase in human rights abuses and repression.
The Indian government’s decision to hold events, such as the ‘Ekatma Mahotsav Rally’ organized by the BJP in RS Pura on August 5, is viewed as a provocative act aimed at normalizing its occupation and suppressing the rights of the Kashmiri people.
Hurriyat leaders in Srinagar issued statements urging the international community to condemn India’s actions and hold it accountable for its violations of international law. They emphasized that the people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve the right to self-determination and freedom from occupation, warning that any attempts to suppress these rights will only lead to further instability and conflict in the region.
