New Delhi, The Opposition bloc, INDIA, organized nationwide protests today, voicing strong objections against the suspension of 146 of its members during the Winter Session of Parliament.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the protests began at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, focusing on the theme of “saving democracy.” The suspended MPs have been barred from parliamentary participation since December 14, following their disruption of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha sessions. Their suspension was a consequence of raising slogans and demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the December 13 Parliament security breach.
High-profile Opposition leaders, including Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury, and several others such as Jairam Ramesh, A Raja, Gaurav Gogoi, Sharad Pawar, Mukul Wasnik, and Naseer Hussain, were present at the Jantar Mantar protest.
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, during his speech at the protest, recounted the incident of the security breach in Lok Sabha. He claimed that BJP MPs hastily left the House when a group of youngsters entered Parliament and released smoke. Gandhi’s remarks highlighted the shock and fear he perceived among the BJP lawmakers during the incident.
The protests extended beyond Delhi, with the Congress-led United Democratic Front in Kerala organizing a sit-in near Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram. The protests also spread to Telangana, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and other states, showcasing the widespread discontent among the Opposition ranks.
On the previous day, Thursday, the suspended MPs marched from the Parliament building to Vijay Chowk in Delhi, further emphasizing their disapproval of the mass suspension.
The Winter Session of Parliament, which commenced on December 4, was adjourned indefinitely a day ahead of its scheduled conclusion, amidst ongoing tensions and disruptions.
