Srinagar, In the lead-up to India’s Republic Day on January 26, Indian forces have reportedly intensified security measures in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), leading to increased harassment of local residents.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the day is traditionally observed as a black day by Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and around the world. In response to potential anti-India protests, Indian authorities have deployed heavy contingents of troops, paramilitary forces, and Special Operation Group personnel in Srinagar and other towns across the territory.
The heightened security includes the establishment of checkpoints with sliding barricades at all entry points into the Kashmir valley and along the Srinagar-Jammu highway. Residents are experiencing increased instances of cordon and search operations, house raids, frisking, random searches, and identity card checks by Indian police and paramilitary personnel.
Additionally, young people in the region are reportedly being summoned daily to police stations and Tehsildar offices. They are required to sign documents and demonstrate their presence to affirm that they are not engaged in any anti-India or pro-freedom activities.
This escalation of security measures occurs annually around January 26, when the people of the occupied territory observe a complete shutdown to mark the day as a Black Day. This is done following the call of the All Parties Hurriyet Conference, reflecting the ongoing tensions and resistance in the region.
