Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting in Islamabad today to end the trend of illegal tobacco smuggling and tax evasion in the country, in which Finance Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Minister Interior Rana Sanaullah Khan, Special Assistant to Prime Minister Tariq Bajwa, Chairman FBR Asim Ahmed and senior officials attended.

The meeting was told that on the instructions of the Prime Minister, Track and Trace System has been installed in most of the cigarette factories, as a result of which the tax collection in the tobacco sector has improved. From July to December, the sector has collected Rs 83.5 billion in taxes, which is 26 percent more than the tax collected during the same period last year.

The Prime Minister directed that the FBR should adopt a comprehensive strategy to improve the tax collection system, so that tax evasion in the sector can be completely eradicated. The Prime Minister appreciated the efforts of the FBR officials to improve the tax system, and urged them to intensify their efforts to bring substantial improvements in the tax collection system.
