Karachi: In a significant legal development, the High Court of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) has overturned the detention of Kashmiri journalist Sajad Gul. Gul, who was detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA), had his detention quashed due to the court finding the grounds vague and in violation of constitutional rights.
According to the Kashmir Media Service, Sajad Gul, a journalism student at the Central University of Kashmir, was initially arrested on January 10, 2022, following multiple raids on his residence by Indian troops. Facing continuous raids, Gul surrendered himself to the police. He has been incarcerated in Uttar Pradesh’s central jail in India.
The case against Gul originated from a video he posted, depicting protests over the death of Salim Parray. Parray was killed on January 3 during a Counter-Insurgency Operation (CASO) in the Harwan area of Srinagar. His death led to protests and public outcry in his hometown of Hajin, located in North Kashmir.
