Srinagar: Several areas in the higher reaches of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir witnessed fresh snowfall today, affecting travel and marking the season’s first snowfall for some tourist destinations. The weather event led to the closure of the Srinagar-Leh highway, officials confirmed.
According to Kashmir Media Service, despite the snowfall, most locations recorded night temperatures above freezing. Tourist destinations such as Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Islamabad district experienced the first snowfall of the season. Additionally, popular resorts like Gulmarg and Sonamarg received snow, as did Gurez, the Zojila axis, and other high-altitude areas.
The snowfall in these regions is a significant event for both tourism and local infrastructure, as the closure of key routes like the Srinagar-Leh highway can impact travel and supply chains. The snowfall marks a crucial period as the region transitions into winter, affecting both local residents and the tourism industry.
